My Old Dog Casey

by Jennifer
(Pacific Northwest)

I lost my old dog Casey many years ago, and unfortunately I don't have any pictures of him handy, but had to tell this great story.

He was a purebred Cocker Spaniel, and was born with an overbite. Because of his defect they were going to put him to sleep. My aunt rescued this little imperfect guy and brought him to our house when I was around 6 years old.

He stole our hearts, and by the time I was around 17 or 18 years old, he had gone completely blind with cataracts and was also going deaf.

The great thing is that we had lived in the same place his entire life, so he knew everything well. He got around just fine with the exception of Spring and Fall when mom would re-arrange the furniture, but he would quickly adjust.

When my brother-in-law came to pick up my sister for their first date, he was walking across the room to shake hands with my father, and of course expected the dog to move out of the way.

Needless to say, Casey didn't move and my brother-in-law ended up in my father's lap. We've never let him forget that first hilarious meeting.

We let Casey go when I was 19 years old. I had him my entire childhood and teenage years. He was the most awesome dog, and only got better as he got older.

Thanks so much for giving me a place to share :)
