Darky (1998 - 2010)

Darky, injured again by our new dog.

Darky, injured again by our new dog.

My beloved dog Darkie passed away this afternoon on boxing day.
She was a mixed breed.

Although we already knew that she sleeps quite often during the day,it was only last week that we noticed that she was panting heavily quite often and only stopped eating last night.

She came into our house by herself one evening in 1998 and refused to leave even after we tried to chase her out around our front yard. None of us wanted her at first because we already had two dogs at that time. She was an ugly looking animal and looked like a cat without fur. She was also badly injured with deep bite wounds around her neck and was so thin that she could walk through the back gate.

Eventually we decided to provide her food, shelter and a bath. After nursing her wounds (My dad is a medical doctor), we took her to be spayed by the vet and that was when we realized that she was about 6-7 months old.

Despite of us not wanting another dog, we decided to keep her because she does not like to go out and was a good guard dog with a loud bark. The only bad behavior that I could recall was that when she was still a puppy she liked to bite our footwear.

Nobody will ever know her life before we rescued her or why she chose us. Maybe she can sense that we were able heal her wounds and will take good care of her. Although I am saddened that she is gone now, I am glad that I was beside her before she breathed her last breath. I will surely miss her for the good times we had together.

Lovely

Darky chose you to be her family. How many dogs get to do that? What a wonderful privilege to be chosen by such a discerning animal. I am sure you must have so many lovely memories of her - a wonderful life to celebrate.
